Exposure therapy for dogs. Given our specialties — reactive, fearful, separation anxiety, resource guarding, cognitive training, and science‑based methods — exposure therapy is a core component of our existing approach. We incorporate BAT‑style setups and use controlled distance. Moreover, we apply cognitive engagement to align perfectly with desensitization + counterconditioning best results.
What is it?
Exposure therapy training is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that we use to help dogs confront fears and anxiety-inducing situations. We use a gradual, controlled exposure to a fear‑triggering stimulus while keeping the dog below its stress threshold and pairing each step with positive experiences. In this therapy, it is critical to help the dog make the proper brain engagements with the surrounding. At the same time, we keep their emotions in a positive and self-regulated level.
Exposure therapy helps the dog’s brain assimilate and learn that the trigger is not dangerous. Repeated, safe exposures reduce anxiety and avoidance behaviors over time.
This approach is especially important for:
- Fearful dogs
- Anxious dogs
- Reactive dogs
- High arousal dogs
- Impulsive dogs
- Exuberant and hyper active dogs
- Dogs with noise sensitivities
- Dogs with specific phobias (for example: men, kids, people with hats, skateboards, other dogs, etc.)
In our therapy we construct a step-by-step plan, specific to each individual dog and situation. This is not a one size fits all plan. Fear is very specific to each individual dog. Their history, experiences, household, living area, temperament, personality, and breed are very different for each one of them.
We make sure that the whole process is an enjoyable experiment for all parties involved in the process: dogs, the owner, and stand-byers. Also, it is done in a safely manner.
